What is Ustream?

  • Interactive live media streaming.
  • Launched in 2007.
  • Allows users to broadcast their own channels on Ustream network or on a third party site (i.e. your blog).
  • Allows live viewing and presenter to audience interaction via commenting and live chat.
  • Ustream offers a platform to host events, which are called shows or set up conversations with participants from anywhere around the world.
  • Ustream is also a social network. It’s encouraged that you create a profile, “favorite” shows, “follow” those you’re interested in, create broadcast schedules, add bulletins and be social with other users.
  • Viewers (and users alike) can rate and review shows. Doing so can positively affect a show’s standings on the home page.
  • There are older recorded shows you can search for within the site.

Who is Using Ustream?

  • Politicians. In 2008 seven million viewers turned their browsers to Ustream to watch live streaming coverage of the Republican National Convention.
  • Musicians.
  • Hollywood.
  • College and University professors are using for sporting events and prominent guest speakers.
  • Gary Vaynerchuk.
  • Ustream reported that last July 410,000 people were streaming video, and averaging 15,000 unique shows per day.

How does Ustream work?

To broadcast on Ustream you must have internet connection and webcam. The site is free. Once registered, enter basic information about your show and click Start Broadcast to begin a live streaming show.

The feed is live on the web once you click Start Broadcast.

From the Ustream site, users can email their broadcast URL to the names in their address book, or Tweet and Facebook the link.

Some advanced capabilities include desktop screen sharing and picture in a picture displays.

From Ustream’s home page, users can watch featured programs. Programs on the home page are those that are highest rated based on user feedback.

Users can also search.

Once users begin watching a video stream, they can chat live with other participants or comment on the feed.

Registered users can keep track of their favorite shows by clicking “Follow” on the show’s main page. Then the show will show up in the “My Feeds” section of their profile.

Why Does Ustream Have Significance?

Ustream offers an attractive means for internet broadcasters to connect with their audience and/or community. It allows for dialogue between users and opportunities for deeper connections (globally).

Overall, Ustream fosters and encourages richer online connections.

What are the Downsides to Ustream?

The live video streaming isn’t always uninterrupted. The site requires a steady connection, which often makes it difficult for remote users and those with a limited bandwidth.

What Are the Implications Ustream Has For Marketing?

More examples include-

Let’s say you’re giving Primerica training at a hotel conference room.

There are those in attendance, but you also want to provide a live feed on the Internet.

Why?

Maybe you’ll only be doing this seminar one time, and you have reps who live far away.

Broadcasting live in this case would be a good use of marketing and training.

For example, if I were doing a live video workshop of creating a marketing funnel, that’s all I’d talk about, and I could answer questions and solve problems along the way.

Another option that would work well is the “talk show” format.

This is where you act as a host and interview people. You can even have a co-host or a group of co-hosts where you discuss a topic. Tip: keep it moving and make sure there is chemistry between everyone, or at least some magnetic personalities.

And other option is the “ask the expert” format.

This is where, at a scheduled time each week, you host a show where people can tune in and ask you questions live. As long as you’re an expert in something (stock trading, gardening, whatever), this is a format you can easily pull off. Plus, your audience provides all the “content” for you, in the form of their questions.

What People Are Saying...

I am loving the system! I can't stop thinking about it, and when I'm not going through the tutorials, all I can think about is finding time to get back to it. Keep up the good work!
