(Read all the way to the bottom of this article to find out how you can help!)
One of the wonderful things about developing coaching skills is that your confidence level soars. When you feel confident and comfortable, it allows you to meet, socialize with and interview top people in your industry and beyond. This can have a tremendous impact on the success of your business.
In this article, I wanted to share with you the steps I take when I go after an interview or set out to meet a person I feel will bring value to my customers and clients. Is it outside my comfort zone? Yes. Does it work? Yes! And it can work for you as well.
Recently I wrote an article about Donny Osmond and the Surprising Connection with Entrepreneurs. I decided…or I should say…I set my intent to interview him. I have made this intent public because I have found that when I share my goals with another person, I deepen my own commitment to making it happen.
That’s what we do in coaching. We explore the client’s goals and help them to make those goals happen. The partnership between coach and client can be very powerful.
Why would a Celebrity or Industry Guru Take the Time out to Give an Interview?
I get asked this a lot. That’s why the approach is not what they can do for you but what you can do for them. The fact is, even if you only have a small audience, it still gives free exposure for the person you are interviewing. Don’t underestimate what you can offer.
As a coach and as a marketer, everything begins with bringing value to the other person. With that as a starting point, you feel more confident. You are giving and sharing what you have first. When that is your first priority, the rest follows naturally. It’s a different perspective.
Because in coaching the focus is 100% on the client, a coach quickly develops the skills of finding out what their customer or client, or in this case celebrity really wants. It’s easier to move someone toward taking action when it is something they want to do.
You learn to trust your intuition. Intuition is a powerful tool for a coach and the great news is that it can be developed. Your intuition will lead you to making sound business choices as well as giving you the right words to say when working with your customers.
We will be developing all of these skills – shifting perspective, “reading your client’s inner thoughts,” tapping in to your intuition and making you into a truly confident coach and/or business owner during our Coaching Cognition training.
So here’s the formula I am using for getting that interview with Donny Osmond:
Step 1: I explored what it was I wanted to do and why. I trusted my intuition.
Step 2: I set my goal and my intent – get an interview and see what is needed to have him speak at our Live Event.
Step 3: I set a time frame – in this case, it’s built in since our Live Event is in January, I would need to interview him and get with his PR people to schedule no later than December.
Step 3: I looked at my resources and what was available to me and what I needed to do to set things in motion
Step 4: Take action
What could I do to bring value to Donny Osmond first? What are his needs in this moment? Give without want.
a. Vote for him on Dancing with the Stars 800-868-3405 vote Monday nights – go to his site for online voting
b. Call radio stations and request his new release “I Have You to Thank”
c. Donate to his charity, Children’s Miracle Network through his site: www.donny.com
d. Join his membership site in order to connect – there’s a free level
e. Attend his live Twitter chats on Thurs evenings his twitter account is http://twitter.com/donnyosmond
f. Post articles about his new release, his integrity, his positive influence – keywords like famous entrepreneurs, his name of course, his Vegas show with Marie at the Flamingo and link to the article at BetterNetworker.
Let the right people know I wish to do the interview and why – his publicist (happens to be his son) and his assistant.
Enlist the aid of my network – this means YOU!
Want to help make this happen?
I am asking that you go to your twitter account and send a message along the lines of
@donnyosmond @bsilva voting 4 you on DWTS. Hope u do the interview and present ur talk “Believe in Yourself” looking 4ward 2 it
Choose whichever way you feel comfortable in supporting this, but let him know what you are doing – be it requesting his song or voting or donating or posting about him. We don’t want him to feel spammed by these requests. The point is to go ahead and do something for him whether or not he agrees to the interview.
It’s also important that you include the @bsilva so that he connects this support with our community.
Let’s see the power of our network –and I’ll see you at Coaching Cognition and at the Live Event in January!
Let your light shine!
Barbara

Well, Barbara,
I would say that this post brings multiple value.
The reader gets incredible value in the formula you have outlined to accomplish a goal.
You have done, once again, a great service to make sure marketing is done at it’s finest, serving the customer first and foremost. That is a great value to, in this case, Donny Osmond.
We do well to take heed of your cautions to be responsible in our efforts to support this JV.
Coaching Cognition is promoted well, as we see the end result of you putting your own lessons into action.
Wouldn’t surprise me at all to read the announcement of the interview forthcoming.

Donny and his partner are one of five competing tonight for another chance to dance.
They did a 60’s number and very interesting 80’s tune tonight.
I made my vote. We’ll see if they dance tomorrow.

Cool, Donny and his partner made it forward to the semi-final next week.

Hi Barbara,

I have made this intent public because I have found that when I share my goals with another person, I deepen my own commitment to making it happen.
I think it’ll happen. Sort of like when you said you were going to meet Robert Kiyosaki, you did. Sort of like when you said you were going to partner with Mike Klingler, you did. Sort of like when you said you were going to meet the crew at Magnetic Sponsoring, you did.
You have always had a unique way of creating intent and whamo! it happens. Such a great model our community.
We’re all pulling for you and we can’t wait for you to bring that interview to all of us.
On behalf of our 3,000 plus community, we’re all behind you.

I’ve always believed that all we have to do is tell the Universe what we want. As you say Barbara, set the intention.
If we all intend the same results, the Universe can do nothing else but DELIVER!

Barbara, Such a wonderful gift you have for showing all of us that you indeed walk the talk! You and I have had numerous conversations regarding your intent to invite Donny to our Live Event in January or at very least sit down and interview him and from the very beginning, I have been behind you 110%.
You and I have been enjoying watching Donny on Dancing with the Stars and that is when you began to understand the man behind the entertainer. You diligently did your research to find out that Donny has been through so much in his life and realized that he had much to offer the entrepreneurial movement.
Most people would have missed that connection.
You gave us a blueprint on how you go about meeting people like Robert Kiyosaki, Eben Pagan, Frank Kern, Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg and of course Mike Klingler by bringing value to them first.
I have taken your advice and have since put out my own intentions. I was already voting for Donny on DWTS but also have alerted my list to follow suit. Along with that I am supporting Donny’s son, Don, by donating to his latest charity cause, Movember: Changing the Face of Men’s Health…http://us.movember.com/mospace/291390/
Maybe I’m biased but next time around it’ll be Donny wanting to request an interview with you! (Wink, Wink!)

Thanks, Barbara for the great steps for how to move forward and make your marketing a success. Giving value–without demanding anything in return is definitely one of the points made by most successful business people and coaches.
And it all has to do with intention–in a broad sense. Intending to give more value than the other person asks for–or even before he or she asks.
Who knows which doors will open. But doors do open.

Thanks for laying out our process, from forming intent through planning to successful action.
That process works amazingly well – especially when it is driven by good intention and led by value for the other person.
I’m a supporter on Twitter.
Good Luck.
It will be pretty exciting to see Donny at the live event – that will be a crowd pleaser!

Thanks for your blueprint to reaching your objective to contact and interview Donny. I can see how it applies to all our marketing effort.
Much thanks.

Barbara I cant wait to hear your interview – In my mind it has already happened and you are just getting it edited before we get to hear it. Donny is someone that I have admired for years – as well as Marie.

Barbara, this is a great article on many different levels. I love the steps you lay out for moving from desire to action. This is SO powerful when people put it into practice.
For me the most important part is the implied mindset in your writing. It’s a mindset of simply assuming that what you’re going for is already a reality. This really applies in all areas of life.
Thanks a bunch for sharing this with us.

Barbara, Your formula for getting the interview with Donny Osmond, or for setting and achieving any goal for that matter is spot on. The two most important steps though are trusting your intuition and setting your intention.
Too many times we don’t listen to our own inner voice. We all know what to do if we’d just trust ourselves to do it. Thanks for a great post.

What a great plan. Thanks for putting it out there to share with all of us. I am certain that you will get the interview. This is the power of positive thinking at its best and then you take the necessary action. You will be very successful.

Barbara you have always been one to set your sets and achieving them and this is no different. Setting an intent or goal and going after it will always produce the desired impact.
I truly believe that what you are setting out to do here is no different and it is going to be reality even before you are really there.
Your insight is always so refreshing and powerful.

Barbara,
I love how you identified how a plan should revolve. Especially, in taking action once it evolutionize.
Barbara, I truly believe in what you said about making a plan public. Because once it’s public, you’ve decided to commit to it.
Just to reiterate,
“Recently I wrote an article about Donny Osmond and the Surprising Connection with Entrepreneurs. I decided…or I should say…I set my intent to interview him. I have made this intent public because I have found that when I share my goals with another person, I deepen my own commitment to making it happen
Thanks Barbara,
Donna Wells

Barbara: Just Fantastic! Also appreciate how you took us from start to finish in working toward your goal. You have my support for getting your interview, can’t wait.

Hey Barbara,
I’ve booked my flight to meet you at the Live event to hear all about your encounter with Donny!
Donny brings so much to the discussion on coaching. Man, he endures 7 hours a day of being told what to do and how to make that dance work. I can hardly imagine the intensity… while having fun, and making something happen he perhaps never imagined.
Comment by Pat Campbell — November 18, 2009 @ 9:12 pm
This is such a great article on many levels and clearly demonstrates how we should all be doing our marketing.
We have all posted our intent to the Universe. All you need to do now is have interview prepared as soon as that phone rings. Ring! Ring!
What date are you posting the Interview for us all to lsiten too.
What a great Christmas present for you and truly deserved.
Comment by Judith Atkinson — November 19, 2009 @ 4:04 am
Barbara,
That’s what I love about what you’ve taught me about coaching. It’s not about me. I want it to be about the client, and feel the tremendous satisfaction when the client receives what they need. “That” gives me what I want.
So, when Donny feels your true intent: to give without want, how can he say no? (The formula’s going to work!)
Comment by Becky Joubert — November 19, 2009 @ 7:38 am
So here’s the update…I’ve heard from Donny’s manager who at this moment has politely declined the interview. Does that mean it’s over? No. These things come to fruition in their own time. If this interview is meant to happen, meaning there is value to be had for both Donny and for my clients, it will happen at the right time.
I’ll continue to give my support anyway because I really do respect what Donny has done with his life and career.
Meanwhile, I have been in touch with Donny’s older son who is involved with Movember – a cause for men’s health issues. Having lost my brother to prostate cancer, this is something I can authentically support regardless of Donny interview outcomes.
I’ve also heard from Brandon Osmond who is an amazing photography student. We are talking about possibly doing a shoot. Since Brandon is expressing himself through his photography, it is very important that the relationship developed here be completely separate from his dad. I will not be asking Brandon for the “inside” route to Donny.
Rather, I look at this as perhaps what was meant to happen all along. I had a deeply emotional response to Brandon’s work and I would not have found him if it wasn’t for doing research on the Osmonds.
The point is your path to a goal may take unexpected turns. Look at each detour and evaluate it – will it help you reach your goal or to set a new one? Is it a complete detour best left alone?
Set a time frame for your goals, but if you don’t achieve the goal within the time you set, that’s okay. You just keep plugging away knowing that all things will come when the time is right!
Stay tuned!

One of the comments tonight, the final night of the competition, put to Donny by the judges is:” Your attitude is a credit to the profession”.
We continue to learn from him.
