You let the author know about your review, simply because you thought he might enjoy reading it. If you hadn't notified him, he may have never seen otherwise seen it, and therefore would never have blogged about you. Way to go! Helen,

Recently I bought a book as a result of an Amazon dsicussion. I found enormous value in the book and wanted to share my thoughts about the book so I then wrote a review of the book - on Amazon and on my blog and notified the book author. Unexpectedly he blogged about me, which was not the reason I wrote the review... I have since gone back to the author's blog and left comments to add value. I like to promote others.
